We spotted some beautiful wildlife today on our trip to Oak Glen. DH was able to get some nice pictures!This Bobcat was hunting gophers in the apple orchards. He was one of the biggest Bobcats I've ever seen!This Great Egret was also hunting gophers.

One of the nice things about doing our 3+ mile walk everyday is enjoying the changing seasons. We have already had three small snow storms but Fall is still carrying on, looking beautiful. The Black Oaks are especially pretty this year.

Summer seemed to go by in a flash! Out in the back by the woodpile I have a large nursery pot in which I keep some smaller pots. There is a plant saucer on top which seals out the rain and snow. I went out to look for a pot the other day and when I lifted off the saucer a movement caught my eye and I saw a little Deer Mouse scuttle under the wood pile. Inside the large pot, in a tiny little three inch pot, was a cozy nest.

I finished my quilt-as-you-go quilt! It's been done for a while now but I never got around to taking a picture. In our 13 years living in the mountains, this is the first time we have ever seen an above-ground yellow jacket hive. This Spring we have been catching the queens like crazy - having a hive in your yard is not something you want. We learned that lesson by hard experience. One year DH accidently dug into a nest and the yellow jackets chased him down the street; they were stinging him as he ran!

After the babies left the nest I checked on one of the nestboxes. As I cleaned the nestbox I found six little eggs that had been pushed underneath the nesting material. Winter seemed to go on for ever this year! A few nights ago we were awakened by our dogs barking like crazy. We heard some bumps and sounds but didn't get up to investigate. The next morning we found the lid off a trash can and a pile of Fritos right outside our bedroom door. A raccoon must have paid us a visit in the night! There are usually bees and butterflies all over it.A late rose.The Phlox are really tall this year!The Echinaceas didn't flower as much as they usually do.Our apple crop is very small this year. A surprise bloomer - my Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum). The Hen plant will die after she blooms so I'll get ready to pot up the Chicks so they can take over. The blooms are a very pretty soft pink. I am really pleased with this plant - I got it last Spring and it overwintered very well and put on a lot of growth this Spring.

Inside this cabinet Mrs. Thistlethorn Mouse has made a comfy home. She says she needs some rugs for the floors. I told her I would make some but don't have time right now. Work has been progressing quickly. The inside of the little house has been painted white - I like the look of the open side walls.
